The Government established The Ping Wo Fund in September 2003 to finance preventive and remedial measures to address the gambling-related problems.

The Ping Wo Fund aims to finance the following measures:

  • research and studies into problems and issues relating gambling;

  • public education and other measurements to prevent or alleviate problems relating to gambling;

  • counselling, treatment and other remedial or support services for gamblers with gambling disorder and those affected by them.

The "Don’t Gamble 2022" board game design competition

         The "Dads are No Gamblers@Don’t Gamble Tea Restaurant" was concluded successfully in 2018-2019. Several dads have pledged to be "Dads are No Gamblers" and set a good example for their children about rejecting gambling. Fortunately, we have received funding from the Ping Wo Fund again this year to organize the "Don’t Gamble 2022" board game design competition and openly recruit creative board game designs to continue promoting the message of "anti-gambling".

          The "Don’t Gamble 2022" board game design competition is divided into two stages. The first stage of the competition will be held from April to August 2022. The competition aims to seek creative and distinctive board game designs in Hong Kong, focusing on the theme of illegal online gambling and the harms of gambling. It allows students, parents, and board game enthusiasts to create unique board games by hand, deepening their understanding of the harms of gambling and related issues during the conceptualization process. The competition is divided into student groups and open groups, with teams of 3 to 5 people. The second stage will begin in January 2023, when the winning champion board game will be printed and distributed to primary schools for parent-child education. A promotional microfilm will also be produced to promote and introduce the champion board game. The three main features of this competition plan are as follows:

1. "Board Game Design Sharing Session"
            We understand that "playing board games" and "designing board games" are two completely different concepts. To cater to board game beginners, the plan is to invite professional board game instructors and local board game designers to share their experiences, concepts, and skills in board game design from basic to advanced levels. They will also address and answer the questions of participating teams, enabling them to know how to start from scratch and promote local board game design works.

2. "Board Game Fun Day"
             In the later stage of the competition, there will be a board game fun day, allowing the public to play and vote for the participating designs in real time. During the summer vacation, we will invite many parent-child pairs to act as judges and try out board game designs from different groups. The "My Favorite Board Game Design" will be selected based on their votes. The board game design with the highest score will be produced into a physical board game and distributed to primary schools, using board games as an educational tool to promote the message of no gambling and gamify classroom activities.

3. "Board Game Parent-Child Journey and Workshops"
            This is a follow-up service for the board game competition, expected to be launched in 2023. Parent-child board game workshops will be conducted in primary schools, kindergartens, or social welfare organizations. Through board games, parents and students will experience how board games can bring them closer together. The champion board game design will be used as a demonstration medium to convey the messages of "parent-child" and "anti-gambling" to students and parents, allowing children to learn about the harms of gambling at an early age, cultivate their awareness of rejecting gambling, and establish a gambling-free campus atmosphere.
